Dental Examination

Dental examinations are essential for a healthy smile.

During a dental examination, your dentist will check your oral health.

This is achieved by asking you about any issues that concern you, as well as checking for:

  • Signs of decay and infection.
  • Condition of your gum health.
  • Lumps and bumps in the lining of your mouth, jawline and neck that may be cancerous.
  • The condition of previous dental work.
  • Signs of tooth wear and evidence of grinding and clenching.
  • Problems with your jaw joint.

How often should I have a dental examination?

Generally speaking, you should be attending dental examinations every six months. Those with specific concerns to address may be asked to come in more frequently, so we can treat, and keep on top of developing problems.

Why should I have a dental examination?

If you would like to maintain healthy teeth for life, it’s imperative that you never miss a routine dental examination. Much of caring for your smile has to do with adopting a preventive mindset. With this in mind, these appointments are an opportunity for your dentist to address concerns you may have about your smile, and to pick up on symptomless problems that you won’t have spotted at home.

Missing even a single dental examination has the potential to result in the need for restorative treatment, that could have otherwise been prevented.

How long does a dental examination take and how much does it cost?

The cost and length of a check-up at Quality Dental Group varies, depending on whether you are an NHS patient or a private patient. Our NHS and private fee guide are listed here. Should you require additional treatment such as a filling, inlay or crown to fortify a tooth, your dentist will give you a clear, detailed breakdown of the cost and answer any questions you have about why we are recommending this to you.
