Composite Bonding

Also often called tooth or dental bonding, composite bonding is a cosmetic dental treatment that addresses minor defects like gaps in between teeth, stains, cracks, chips and misshapen teeth.

As the name of the treatment suggests, composite bonding uses a composite resin material that is bonded to the teeth, and this is carefully shaped and layered to create an authentic-looking result.

Why should I consider composite bonding?

There are a number of reasons to choose composite bonding for restoring the appearance of your anterior teeth – this is the upper front 6 teeth most visible when you smile. However, composite bonding is also suitable for addressing defects with just 1 or 2 teeth.

Firstly, most issues can be addressed in just one visit and you’ll be able to comfortably bite down once treatment is complete.

It’s also a less invasive process than getting a veneer or a crown. Both of these procedures require more of your natural tooth matter to be removed, in order for the restoration to be fitted in place. In the case of composite bonding, each tooth merely needs to be roughened in order for the adhesive to remain firmly in position.

Would I be suitable for composite bonding?

You may be suitable for cosmetic bonding if:

  • You have chipped teeth.
  • You have cracked teeth.
  • You have misshapen teeth in shape, height or width.
  • You would like to improve the shade of your teeth, as well as other cosmetic issues, such as those in the bullet points above.
  • You do not have evidence of decay or disease. Such problems will need to be addressed before cosmetic bonding can be performed.

What does the process involve?

We will examine the anatomy of how your teeth sit together when you smile and to establish the characteristics that make it unique to you. Once the suggested treatment plan to improve specific cosmetic issues has been approved by you, we can proceed with treatment. This will be different for each patient depending on the shade, shape, alignment and size of each individual tooth.

Your teeth are roughened in preparation for a special liquid which will allow the layers of composite to adhere effectively. Each fine layer of resin is applied and shaped into place and a UV light is used to harden it. Each tooth is once again shaped and hardened, until an authentic outcome is achieved.

How long do the results last?

Composite bonded teeth can usually be expected to last in the region of 4-7 years. You should avoid sticky or tough chewy foods after composite bonding treatment, as this can shorten the lifespan of the bonded teeth by causing a crack or chip in the composite resin material.

Will it improve my tooth shade?

The specific shade of composite resin used during treatment can be selected to give a whiter and brighter aesthetic to an individual or multiple teeth.

What are the disadvantages?

In some cases, patients may prefer to opt for veneers over composite bonding. Made from porcelain, veneers offer a superior cosmetic result as porcelain is more effective at mimicking the characteristics of real tooth enamel than composite resin – they’re also incredibly stain-resistant.

For patients looking for a durable result, veneers are the favourable option, lasting in excess of 10 years with the correct care. Meanwhile, as mentioned above composite bonding will not last as long. A tooth that has been treated with the composite bonding or veneers process can be looked after just like a real tooth.

Can composite bonding be part of a mini smile makeover?

It’s common for patients to have multiple teeth treated as part of a mini smile makeover (particularly their front teeth which are most visible to others), with a view to improving the overall look of their smile. A mini smile makeover draws on the simplest, least invasive and most convenient treatment techniques, to improve the appearance of a person’s teeth. It’s the holistic process of improving the appearance of teeth as a whole and offers patients a cost-effective alternative to the traditional smile makeover.

Composite bonding can form an integral part of a mini smile makeover, re-shaping and re-sizing teeth, once they have undergone:

Alignment: when teeth are re-aligned with orthodontic treatment.

Teeth Whitening: when teeth are whitened to give a healthier and whiter shade, and to reverse dullness, discolouration and staining.

Cosmetic bonding can then be carried out to address irregularities with tooth shape and size, and improve the shade of individual teeth that may have been resistant to the bleaching process, due to enamel erosion for example.

How long does composite bonding take?

Treating a single tooth with composite bonding should not normally take longer than an hour. If you’re having multiple teeth treated as part of a mini smile makeover, you can expect this to be longer.
