Mouth Guard

Mouth guards are custom made appliances that even out pressure across the jaw, and create a barrier between the upper and lower teeth to stop them meeting. Mouth guards can be made to wear during contact sports and to stop tooth grinding and consequent tooth wear.

What are mouth guards used for?

Sports mouth guards protect your teeth from injury during contact sports and are most commonly used for playing sports like rugby, squash, wrestling, water polo, boxing and hockey. Worn on the upper teeth, a sports mouth guard creates a protective layer between your teeth and the point of impact, preventing serious dental injuries.

Sports mouth guards created by a dentist are significantly more effective than those bought over-the-counter, which are a poor fit for the purchaser’s teeth and will not provide adequate protection should any contact to the mouth and teeth occur. As they’re custom made, sports mouth guards can offer excellent protection for your teeth.

Mouth guards can also be used to treat conditions including sleep apnoea (a condition that temporarily stops breathing during sleep), snoring and tooth grinding. Mouth guards for sleep apnoea and snoring open up the upper airways, to facilitate breathing during sleep and improve the quality of sleep.

Meanwhile, mouth guards that stop teeth grinding will prevent tooth wear, facial pain, headaches and earaches and TMD (temporomandibular disorder). This is a condition affecting the movement and mobility of the jaw.

What is the process of having a mouth guard made?

Mouth guards are made by taking impressions of your teeth, which are then used to create a highly accurate mould of your mouth. This model also shows the dentist how your teeth bite together.

A dental technician will create your mouth guard and its thickness and the material used will be determined by how severe your jaw clenching or grinding is.

How do I take care of my mouth guard?

Taking care of your mouth guard is paramount, as bacteria easily collects on it each day and could cause an infection or bad breath.

Clean your mouth guard by following these simple steps:

  • Rinse in tepid water.
  • Apply a small amount of toothpaste on a toothbrush.
  • Gently brush all surfaces of your mouth guard.
  • Rinse the toothpaste off and let the mouth guard dry.
  • Pack your mouth guard away in its case when you are not wearing it.

You can also use alcohol-free soap and water to wash your mouth guard. If your mouth guard requires a deeper clean, over-the-counter nonabrasive denture cleaner is effective.
