Veneers

Veneers protect a tooth from further damage and can improve the shade of a tooth. Unlike crowns, they only cover the front surface. They are more suitable for teeth that only require a minor amount of restoration, and for patients who are predominantly looking to improve the appearance of a tooth.

Why should I have a veneer?

Veneers offer an outstanding cosmetic result when it comes to improving the shade and shape of a tooth. They can also be used to close small gaps in your smile. They produce a highly aesthetic and natural result as they’re made from porcelain, which possesses the same light-reflecting properties as real tooth enamel.

How should I maintain a veneer?

You can care for your veneer in the same way as you would your natural teeth. This involves brushing twice a day and flossing after each meal. You should avoid chewing anything that might chip your teeth, such as ice or objects such as pens, as this could damage your veneer.

Whilst veneers are highly stain resistant, you should still take care to avoid a diet high in sugar and acidic food and drink. We recommend limiting or avoiding red wine which contains tannins that stain your teeth, as well as tea and coffee, all which are common teeth-staining culprits.

Make sure you visit the dentist and hygienist at least twice a year (we may recommend more frequent visits depending on the condition of your oral health) and refrain from using tobacco.

How long do veneers last?

Veneers last about 10 years, though this can be prolonged with a consistent and effective oral hygienist routine.

What is the process of having a veneer?

You can expect the following steps as part of the veneers process, which is generally performed over 2 visits:

  • An initial examination of your tooth is performed to determine if you are a good candidate for veneers. People with severely crowded teeth, active gum disease and who regularly grind their teeth will not be suitable for veneers. If you require any fillings, these will be performed beforehand.
  • The tooth in question is prepared by removing a small amount of tooth enamel, so that the veneer is the correct thickness to sit comfortably over the top.
  • An impression of your veneer is taken, so that a temporary veneer can be placed. Whilst the permanent veneer is being made by the dental lab, the trial period with the temporary veneer is an opportunity for you to decide if you would like the shade of shape of the veneer amended.
  • Your newly sculpted permanent veneer is sent back to the practice and applied to your tooth using a strong adhesive. Any small adjustments are then made.

You should care for your temporary veneer by:

  • Avoiding sticky and tough foods.
  • Taking extra care when brushing and flossing.
  • Avoiding teeth-staining food and drink.
